Reviewed October 13, 2026. Character dining at Walt Disney World combines a meal with Disney character appearances. It can be a memorable part of a first trip, but it is worth choosing the right restaurant, meal and time for your family.
What I love most is the chance to enjoy those special moments together while taking a break for a meal. It is an option to consider, rather than something every family needs to book.
Is character dining worth it at Disney World?
It can be worthwhile if your family values character time and wants a seated meal. Compare the full price, food choices and likely time commitment with your other priorities. A child who finds costumed characters overwhelming may prefer a regular restaurant. A family focused on rides may prefer a quicker meal.
Does character dining save time?
It combines food and character appearances, which may reduce the number of separate character queues you choose to join. It does not guarantee a faster park day. Allow time for seating, the meal and character rotations; avoid putting a tightly timed attraction reservation immediately afterward.
Character lineups and interaction formats can change. Do not promise a particular autograph, hug or character before checking the restaurant’s current description.
Which meal includes characters?
Check the specific meal, not just the restaurant name. At ‘Ohana, the Best Friends Breakfast features Lilo and Stitch; dinner does not include characters. Toy Story theming alone also does not mean character dining: Roundup Rodeo BBQ is not a character meal.
When should you book character dining?
Dining reservations generally open 60 days ahead. Guests with a valid Disney Resort hotel reservation can book for their stay, up to 10 nights, beginning 60 days before arrival. New booking windows for select restaurants become available at approximately 6 a.m. Eastern Time. Check Disney’s dining reservation guidance for current details.
Popular meals can fill quickly, so have a few alternatives. Fairytale Journeys Travel advisors discuss clients’ park days and dining preferences and help book reservations, subject to availability. Planning services are complimentary to clients.
Do you need a park ticket or dining plan?
You need valid park admission for a restaurant inside a theme park; a dining reservation does not replace it. Resort restaurants such as Chef Mickey’s are outside the parks. You do not need to purchase a dining plan simply to reserve a meal.
If you have a dining plan, confirm participation and the number of meal credits for the restaurant and meal you choose. Our Disney Dining Guide explains how to compare options.
How do you choose a character meal for children?
- Start with characters your child knows and enjoys.
- Check the menu instead of assuming every buffet has the same food.
- Choose a time that works with naps and your family’s normal mealtimes.
- Tell the dining team about allergies and dietary needs.
- Include everyone in the reservation count, including infants.
