The Best Time to Book a Disney Vacation
Updated October 13, 2026 · Walt Disney World planning
For a first Walt Disney World vacation, we recommend starting 6–12 months before your trip and booking once your dates are available and your budget feels comfortable. That is a planning recommendation, not a Disney booking requirement. Earlier booking can give you more room choices; it does not guarantee the lowest price.
This timeline is for Walt Disney World in Florida. Planning California or a cruise? Use our Disneyland Planning Guide or Disney Cruise Line Planning Guide.
How far ahead should you book Disney World?
Start with your dates, the number of people traveling, and a total trip budget. Then compare available hotels and tickets. If your travel dates have not opened for booking, make a shortlist and ask your advisor to check when those dates become available.
- First trip: Aim for 6–12 months so you have time to compare options without rushing.
- School breaks, holiday travel, or a specific room: Start earlier and check availability as soon as your dates open. Family suites, connecting-room requests, and particular resorts can limit your choices. Requests are not guarantees.
- Flexible dates and hotels: Compare several combinations. A different arrival date or room category may fit your budget better.
- Less than 60 days away: A trip can still work. Check rooms and transportation first, then build your plans around available dining and experiences.
Choose the hotel for your family’s needs before assuming that the cheapest nightly rate is the best value. Our Disney World Resort Guide explains room types, transportation, and resort categories.

Booking your hotel does not book your dining or Lightning Lane passes. These are separate steps with different opening dates.
6–12 months before: choose dates, hotel, and tickets
Compare the full trip cost: room, tickets, transportation, food, optional extras, and spending money. Check flight options before committing to dates, and read the change and cancellation terms before paying. Keep your confirmation and payment deadlines together.
2–6 months before: make a simple park plan
Decide which parks matter most and where you want a rest day. Shortlist a few sit-down or character meals, with backup choices. Use our Walt Disney World Planning Guide for tickets and park planning rather than trying to schedule every minute.
60 days before: make dining reservations
Disney Resort hotel guests can make dining reservations 60 days before arrival for their stay, up to 10 nights. Other guests can book 60 days before each dining date. New reservation availability generally opens around 6 a.m. Eastern Time. Popular meals can fill quickly, and availability is not guaranteed.
Quick-service meals do not need dining reservations. For sit-down meals, character dining, and dining-plan basics, see our Disney Dining Guide. Fairytale Journeys Travel advisors discuss park days and dining preferences with their clients and help book dining reservations.
Before your payment deadline: review the reservation
Check the exact due date on your confirmation. Package, room-only, and other booking types can have different terms. Confirm names, dates, tickets, transportation, and any changes before the deadline.
7 or 3 days before: decide about Lightning Lane passes
Eligible hotel guests can purchase Lightning Lane passes starting 7 days before check-in for their stay, up to 14 days. Other guests generally begin 3 days ahead; the applicable date depends on their admission type. Purchasing opens at 7 a.m. Eastern Time. Passes are optional, cost extra, and have limited availability.
The week before: check the details
Review park hours, dining cancellation rules, weather, and transportation plans. Make sure your reservations and tickets are linked in My Disney Experience. Leave room for breaks and changes.
Should you book now or wait for Disney discounts?
Book a trip you can afford at its current price. Waiting for an unannounced promotion can mean losing a preferred room, but booking early does not lock in a future discount.
Fairytale Journeys Travel monitors offers for its clients and can check whether a later promotion applies. Eligibility, room inventory, travel dates, and booking terms matter; a change may be needed, and savings are not guaranteed.
- Compare the total package, not just an advertised percentage.
- Check whether a cheaper room changes your transportation costs or convenience.
- Compare airfare before moving dates for a hotel offer.
- Keep a realistic food and extras budget even if a promotion includes a dining benefit.
There is no single booking day or month that guarantees every family the lowest Disney vacation price. The best time to book is also different from the best time to visit: your school calendar, weather preferences, and priorities shape that decision.
Can you plan a last-minute Disney vacation?
Yes—provided the rooms, tickets, and transportation you need are available. Use this order:
- Confirm the essentials: dates, total cost, available accommodation, and transportation.
- Choose flexible meals: mix quick-service options with available dining reservations. Have alternatives to a hard-to-get character meal.
- Check upcoming deadlines: payment, cancellation, dining, and Lightning Lane eligibility. Do not assume you need every extra to enjoy the trip.
A shorter planning window calls for flexibility, not a packed schedule. Pick your family’s most important experiences and build around them.
Disney vacation booking questions
Should I book Disney World before flights?
Compare both before paying. If your dates are fixed, confirm the hotel and transportation combination works together. Check cancellation and change terms before buying anything nonrefundable.
Does unavailable mean sold out?
Not always. Your dates may not yet be open, or the room or offer you selected may be unavailable. Ask an advisor to check alternatives before changing the whole trip.
Is 60 days too late to book a Disney vacation?
No. Sixty days is an important dining milestone, not the deadline for booking a vacation. You may need more flexibility with hotel and restaurant choices.
Do I need to reserve every meal?
No. Quick-service dining works without reservations. Reservations are recommended for table-service and character meals, especially popular restaurants. A dining plan does not reserve a table for you.
Can a travel advisor help after I have already booked?
Possibly. Whether a reservation can be transferred depends on its booking details and applicable rules. Ask Fairytale Journeys Travel to review your reservation before canceling or changing it.
Does Fairytale Journeys Travel charge clients a planning fee?
Fairytale Journeys Travel’s planning services are complimentary to its clients. Ask your advisor what assistance is included for your specific vacation.
